The Kensington Whitework mural is inspired by English whitework bed curtains embroidered in chinoiserie style around 1690-1730, and now in the Colonial Williamsburg collection. The curtains feature flowering trees springing from rocky mounds, ponds with wading birds, reeds, grasses, and flowers, all naturalistically arranged. The designs show the English fascination with Chinese style in that era of expanding world trade. Paul Montgomery’s team replicated the exquisite hand embroidery as part of the development of this mural, which is printed on six panels. Actual print does not include embroidery, only a visual replication. The inaugural WILLIAMSBURG Mural Collection X Paul Montgomery re-envisions the rich design archive of Colonial Williamsburg the world's largest living history museum, within a modern sensibility. Sales of WILLIAMSBURG products support Colonial Williamsburg's missions of education, preservation, and engaged citizenship – That the future may learn from the past.
